With this, the fourth monthly DISKLETTER, we hope we've moved from being a novelty to becoming something of a habit for you. The only complaint we've received (alas, from four members) is that we're "giving you too much" in each DISKLETTER and you "Can't get through it." So be assured that it's NOT mandatory to read everything here -- and we won't be having a quiz at the end of the session. The whole idea of the DISKLETTER is to offer as wide a range of material as possible and let YOU choose what interests you and what doesn't! (For a few tips on how to navigate around this DISKLETTER quickly and easily, go to the end of this chapter -- click the scroll bar at the right hand side of this window.)

Although the DocMaker software that this DISKLETTER uses is so simple it practically teaches itself, a few pointers may be helpful.
Navigation is easy: the DISKLETTER is divided up into 17 separate chapters as described above and you can jump directly to any chapter by using the "Chapters" menubar at the top of your screen. Or you can move from chapter to chapter, one at a time, by clicking in the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of this window. And, remember, you move up and down in each chapter by using the vertical scroll bar at the right on the window.
The DISKLETTER runs on any Mac without the need for special software or hardware, but if you have a color monitor you'll enjoy it even more. If you don't, and your Mac has grey-scale capability, be sure to turn it on when reading the DISKLETTER and you'll get an an enhanced view of pictures. If you're running on a Mac with limited memory, you may find it necessary to turn off all INITS and other programs while reading the DISKLETTER. (Re-start your Mac with the Shift held down to temporarily disable INITS.)
You can print all or any part of the DISKLETTER; just use the File menu above, select Print, and choose whether you want to print a single chapter or the whole issue. You can also use this menu to export text and store it or print it outside of the DISKLETTER.
A final word: we've tried to use fonts in the DISKLETTER that every Mac user owns. Specifically, we use Helvetica and Courier, two of the commonest System fonts. If you don't have them, or have removed them from your Mac, or lost them, we can give you replacements. The DISKLETTER looks best if you're using these two fonts, but it'll actually use ANY font you have on your Mac.
And positively last: if you have Adobe Type Manager, ATM, be sure it's turned on when you're reading or printing the DISKLETTER. It makes everything look much better!
